This book is over thirty years old, but a field where very few books are available, it will be useful to those interested in traditional Chinese carpets. It provides a useful history of Chinese carpets and carpetmaking, a detailed (and illustrated) discussion of the symbolism used in Chinese rugs, and a discussion of how rugs are actually made. What's not to like? First, it has nothing on the period in which I am particularly interested -- art deco. Secondly, it devotes a lot of space to carpets made in China from the 1950's to the 1980's. These are not of interest to me, nor, I would imagine, to many rug enthusiasts today. Be that as it may, the book still gets four stars because it definitely fills a niche.
