A Japanese guri lacquer incense box

Description

A Japanese guri lacquer incense box with alternating layers of black and red lacquer carved in deep v-shaped cuts. The core on a light metal, perhaps tin.  Incense boxes of this kind were made by both the Japanese and the Chinese. This box is presumed to be Japanese however Japanese guri lacquer is at times indistinguishable from Chinese “tixi” lacquer.  The lid is heavily perfumed from deposits of incense dust as this box was used in the Japanese tea ceremony (茶道).

Late 19th to early 20th century.
