A japanese urushi yukata tray -Taishō era

This tray was made to hold Yukata (“bathing clothes”) which are worn by guests during their stay at a ryokan (a traditional Japanese inn). For reasons unknown, it was never used and stored away in its original box, for almost 100 years.

It’s surface depiction depicts lively and lifelike Koji (Japanese carp) swimming amongst seaweeds against a backdrop of marbled green and black ground utilizing a Kawari-nuri technique. The underside is decorated in flecks of gold lacquer.

Condition: New condition. As it was never used, the underside is still unscratched. Still in its original box.
