Description
16th to 17th century. Mother of pearl inlay on a black lacquer base. Cinnabar red interior. Boxes of this kind known as “suzuribako,” were imported to Japan in larger quantities around the 16th century onward where they were paired with inkstones, water dropper and brush. This particular box depicts a scene inspired by Confucian values in which young scholars and labors alike stop to study the works of Confucius thus implying a message of accessibility to all.
