Description

An 18th century Chinese rock crystal brush rest.

In Chinese, the word for rock crystal (水晶) means “crystalized water.” In the distant past it was also known as water jade (水玉).

It is a symbol of purity, clarity and honor. The material is also said to ward off evil while bringing good luck. Scholars prized the material for its beauty and uniqueness, and for them it signified solitude and soberness.

This particular brush rest is a typical scholar object and is in the form of a multi-peaked mountain, with the wet brushes “resting” in the valleys. The symbolism of purity and clarity, are combined here with the shape of a mountain, thus also representing nature and stability. To some degree, forms like this can also been seen as scholar rocks themselves, to be contemplated in the same manner.
