Description
In Japanese this table is called a Kyōdzukue 経机 which means sutra table. It can also be called a 外陣経卓 or Ge-jin Sutra Table (in larger sizes). Ge-jin means the place just outside the inner sanctuary of a shrine or Buddhist temple where ordinary people can worship. Normally they have drawers where one can store candles/incense sticks. This particular style is said to originate in Kyoto. Shrine tables of this kind were common across Japan and found in both homes and in temples. On the front of the box are the characters 經机 (scroll table).
On the back is the date it was made: 明治廿六年六月新調之 made in the 6th month of the 26th year of the Meiji period. (This correlates to the year 1893).
